When should a child see a mental health professional?

Signs that may indicate your child or teen could benefit from seeing a therapist can be different for each child.

Although children and teens can have some normal ups and downs, some parents can miss early signs that their child may need support.

If your child has some changes in sleep, appetite, isolation, mood or interest in their normal daily activity for more than two weeks, it may be helpful to speak with your child's primary care physician or call a mental health therapist.

Other signs can include changes in behaviors, recognizing your child is asking more questions related to mental health, changes in academic performance and peer group, experiencing a traumatic event, loss/grief, bullying or social problems. Early intervention is key.

What should I expect during my child’s first therapy session?

  • During your child's first therapy session, Your therapist will take a detailed clinical assessment that gathers information regarding your child's developmental and family history, current problems and needs.
  • If your child is under 18 yrs old, it is required that a parent is present for the initial assessment to sign documentation for consent of treatment as well as provide helpful information for the clinical assessment.
  • Your child's therapist may engage the child or teen in age-appropriate activities to build rapport.
  • Parent Meetings - Discuss Challenges and address any ongoing issues or new concerns. Collaborate on strategies & develop and adjust support plans for home and school. Provide Guidance and offer advice and resources for parents to better support their child.

You might be wondering...

Do you complete ADHD testing?

Our therapists provide a comprehensive clinical assessment that includes screening for ADHD. Depending on the outcome of this assessment, the clinician may use other ADHD screening tools such as the Connors, Achenbach scales and Vanderbilt assessment. These tools assess functioning at home and school and can be useful in identifying potential ADHD in your child or teen. Your child's therapist may determine more in depth testing from a psychologist is necessary in determining a confirmed diagnosis. In some cases your child's therapist may determine the comprehensive assessment and ADHD screening tool is sufficient in identifying the potential for an ADHD diagnosis and may refer your child to their primary care physician.
